The evolution of Rihanna

Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as recording artist ‘Rihanna’ was born on the 20th February 1988 in Saint Michael,Barbados

Rihanna decided to move to the United States when she was just sixteen years of age in order for her to pursue a recording career. Shortly after her move to the US she auditioned with Jay-Z’s record label ‘Def Jams Recordings’ which she passed and signed a contract with.

1st Album “Music of the Sun” (2005)

2nd Album “Girl Like Me” (2006)

3rd Album “Good Girl Gone Bad” (2008)

4th Album “Rated R” (2009)

Latest Single “Only Girl In The World” (2010)

Rihanna’s first single was named ‘Pon de replay’ which came from her first album ‘Music of the Sun’ where she represented her background through the beat and dancing. Her choice of outfits in the music video was very youthful, the crop top, trainers and boyfriend jeans. The long curly hair which was in at the time and a popular hairstyle among girls.

With her most popular single being ‘Umbrella’ which came from her next album ‘Good Girl Gone bad’ Rihanna’s iconography transformed and really lived up to the title of her album.

She started to dress more edgey to what we saw in her first video which consisted of outfits such as leather, studs and even a risky new black cropped haircut. These haircut became a trend and Rihanna had become a style icon.

Rihanna explanation for changing her style was merely because she felt that the genre characteristic of her album’s continued to change so it was only right that she would change her iconography alongside her music album.

In her video “Rude Boy,” we show her representing her background but in a more sexual nature to what we saw in her first video. We see a dominant female image that is exactly what is needed for this video. Clearly, Rihanna presents herself confidently as we see her dancing very sexually and sitting on top of both a stuff lion and zebra, perhaps illustrating her domination or even a becoming a women.

The beautiful singer with the killer body has gone through a serious style transformation since she came on the scene with long honey blonde hair and baggy jeans. These days her hair is a bright red so distinct it's been named after her, and the halter tops have been replaced with skin-tight couture and trend-setting ensembles.
